In this blogseries, we give the floor to our employees to share their view on specific topics. In this post, Stephan expresses his personal opinion and experience after visiting HxGN LIVE 2018 in Las Vegas. Enjoy!

Hexagon introduces a new technique called ‘Xalt’ in all its software. Xalt is a framework wich makes it possible to build Automated Connected Eco-systems (ACE). Due to the hype of the Internet-Of-Things customers have a dramaticly increasing amount of data available. Unfortunatily the tools to use these data are lagging behind. The goal of Xalt is to help customers with this issue and create autonomous systems making use of this data. For example this would mean full integration of all data generated by tools and software with project management when building complex constructions at buildings. So anticipation on problems can be made very quickly.

In the field of G/Technology and Fiber Optic Works (FOW), an ambitious roadmap has been created that provides a new version with updates and new functionality every quarter.  ‘Relation Establishment’, the ‘FOW Design Assist’, and a number of new ‘Add-on products’ are the most outstanding ones.

Relation Establishment
G/Technology has relationships between objects such as connectivity and ownership. The relationships between objects are stored in the metadata of G/Technology and are often silently made. Its quit difficult to change these relationships afterwards by users. G/Technology knows a number of ways to do this, but they are not really intuitive and invite making mistakes easily. Intergraph recognizes this and therefore created a new tool to adjust these relationships, ‘Relation Establishment’.
FOW Design Assist
In Fiber Optic Works you often have to deal with complex networks where users have to start multiple commands to get a valid network. For example a pipe containing a number of guide tubes containing fiber optic cables, all connected to each other. Such objects often only have meaning if they form a network. But if you want to create such a network with standard functionality as a user, in some cases, that can be quite challenging. The ‘Fiber Optic Works’ design assist captures this and enables users to create such networks through a single command.
Add-On Products
Analysis Assistant is a product developed by the German division of Hexagon as part of GEN!US. It enables business users to make analysis without the need for knowledge of SQL or metadata.
QA Tool  is a tool to predefine data analysis queries and run them periodically. In G/Technology not all business rules are enforced. This  is a way for example to prevent inconsistencies in the database. An example of this matter in the area of Telecom is incorrectly connected Fiber Couplers. A Fiber Coupler is used to connect 2 guide tubes and may therefore not have any connections with other features
Xalt will not be entering G/Technology in the coming years. At least it was not mentioned on the roadmap. Although the other objectives on the roadmap are ambitious, they were accompanied by a bold disclaimer, which means that we can not assume it. Unfortunatily my personal experience shows that this is often the case. We have to see which promises come true.
