In June 2016 Merkator NV/SA became an associate member of the worldwide Open Geospatial Consortium or OGC. The OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) is an international not for profit organization committed to making quality open standards for the global geospatial community. These standards are made through a consensus process and are freely available for anyone to use to improve sharing of the world’s geospatial data.
In a first phase we will actively focus on the Utility & Telco tracks with Pipeline Transmission as our immediate focus. In the meanwhile, Jan Stuckens, Senior Geo-ICT Consultant at Merkator, has co-chaired the PipelineML SWG section on the 99th technical meeting of the OGC in Dublin, Ireland.
Merkator has years of experience working with the two national gas transmission pipeline operators Fluxys Belgium NV and NV Nederlandse Gasunie. We want to use our practical Geo-ICT experience to influence several working groups and feed them with valuable information from our key customers. Standardization is a difficult process and needs continuous input from people who are confronted with this area every day. This represents a substantial investment due to the nature of the organization but we are excited to contribute for further standardization and better communication and exchange of information in the Pipeline and Grid industry.
