Use case: Waternet – Utility
Challenge
Waternet manages drinking water, wastewater, surface water, and other domains such as sewer and nature management for the greater Amsterdam area. Thanks to this broad scope, Waternet operates a large number of GIS applications and services from Amsterdam that must remain operationally reliable. The ArcGIS Enterprise environment is crucial for daily operations. However, before implementing GaiaBuilder, Waternet faced several structural challenges:
- Slow and error-prone manual deployments
- No rollback option in case of failed releases, which created operational risks
- Heavy reliance on custom scripts that broke with every Esri update
- Limited integration of GIS with broader DevOps processes within IT
- A growing and diverse GIS landscape with many applications and services, making management and version control increasingly complex

Approach with GaiaBuilder
Waternet implemented GaiaBuilder as a DevOps automation layer on top of ArcGIS Enterprise. This brought several immediate improvements:

Deployments completed in minutes instead of lengthy manual processes

Git-based workflow with complete traceability and audit-ready documentation, fully aligned with Esri’s roadmap

Elimination of custom scripts that created security risks
“GaiaBuilder enables us to carry out ArcGIS Enterprise updates with confidence. What used to take a whole day now only takes minutes, and if something goes wrong, we can instantly roll back.”
Result
Safer, more predictable, and ready for further digitalization

Reduced risks and more stable releases

Full traceability strengthens collaboration and simplifies audits

Fully aligned with Esri’s roadmap and prepared for developments like Utility Network
