Luc De Heyn about Merkator
We asked Luc how he turns Merkator’s vision into real change—both at street level and beyond.
Maps that make a difference
At Merkator, we don’t just map things out. We make sure the lights stay on, the water keeps flowing, and the internet remains connected.
The challenges are significant: our electricity grid under pressure from solar panels and electric cars, telecom networks filled with both old and new technology, and cities struggling with streets constantly being dug up.
The challenges are significant: our electricity grid under pressure from solar panels and electric cars, telecom networks filled with both old and new technology, and cities struggling with streets constantly being dug up.
That’s exactly where we want to make a difference—locally and internationally—because these are the global challenges of today.
From spreadsheets to smart solutions
We don’t just build software. We give utilities the tools to finally move beyond outdated maps and endless Excel sheets. Think digital twins that predict where bottlenecks are likely to occur, or tools that help a city avoid conflicts before the first shovel hits the ground. It’s software and services—the change management aspect shouldn’t be underestimated. But when it works, you can feel it: we’ve truly made a difference here.

Strong team
Fortunately, we don’t do this alone. I work with people who believe in the power of mapping. We have engineers, programmers, project managers—and occasionally even a philosopher who asks, “But why do we actually do it this way?” In the end, it’s simple: the problems are real, the solutions are world-class, and the work we do truly has an impact—even if it’s just street by street.

With GEO technology, we make public spaces smarter, safer, and better connected. The power of maps to improve processes continues to amaze me every day.
